Where do AirDropped files go?

Could you please enlighten me on the mystery of AirDropped files? I'm always curious about where these files actually end up once they've been sent. Is there a specific folder or location where they're stored? Or does it depend on the device or app being used? I've tried searching for them, but they seem to disappear into the ether. Could you help me understand this better?
