Can you play ARK without a dedicated server?

Can you please clarify for me if it's possible to enjoy playing ARK without the need for a dedicated server? I'm curious to know if the game can be played in a more casual, solo or peer-to-peer setting, or if a dedicated server is absolutely necessary for a smooth and enjoyable gaming experience.
