Is Walmart making you bring your own bags?

Excuse me, could you please clarify for me? I've heard rumors that Walmart is encouraging customers to bring their own bags when shopping. Is this true? Are they no longer providing plastic bags at the checkout? If so, what's the reasoning behind this decision? Is it an effort to reduce waste and promote environmental sustainability?
