Why are Apex lobbies so laggy?

Can anyone explain why Apex Legends lobbies are so prone to lag and latency issues? It seems like every time I join a match, the gameplay is choppy and unresponsive, making it difficult to enjoy the game. Is this a common problem among players, or is it just my connection?
