What is the probit model in simple terms?

Could you please explain, in layman's terms, what the probit model is all about? I've heard it mentioned in finance and economics circles, but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around it. Is it some sort of predictive tool? Or does it have more to do with analyzing data? I'd appreciate it if you could break it down for me.
